THREE 4D Eye Palette in 02 My Blue Heaven

I know some of you have been waiting patiently for these THREE posts!  When I get a free moment to take pictures, I go nuts and take dozens and dozens.  The over-abundance of photos make it hard to edit down to a list of decent photos!  I paralyze myself with indecision.  Eeek!

I was originally planning on putting up a giant post with My Blue Heaven along with Astro Girl and Party Monster, but it was really giant that I can't imagine anyone would have the attention span to look through the whole thing.  I myself would have a hard time writing enough descriptive for products on such a long post.  So there.  My Blue Heaven is right up!
THREE My Blue Heaven
I know I often associate Tom Ford eye shadows with the idea of grown-up glitter, but in a way, I think THREE outclasses and out bests the Toms in terms of absolute complexity and execution in tonal subtlety.

Despite what looks like a bright and saturated blue shade in the pan, the application effect on my skin is very subtle.  Here are my swatches, clockwise from the top left starting with the blue.  In these quads, the general format is:
  1.  a slightly pigmented glitter shade, in this case the blue which also has a pale periwinkle shimmer, sparsely scattered pink shimmer, and a bright shimmery white.
  2. a deep colored intensely shimmery and complex (generally with a dual tone that presents a subtle shift in some lighting).  In My Blue Heaven, it is the grey olive (grolive?) shade, that has a brighter golden shimmer that floats to prominence in direct sunlight.
  3. a pale glitter top coat, that doesn't have much of a base color, but provides some intense glitter.  Here is a cool champagne and brighter white glitter.  I kind of consider this my "optional" shade in this quad.  Adding this to the center of my mobile lid just pushes the overall look into serious bling territory.  And my serious, I mean serious for my generally sedate aesthetic.
  4. neutral satin brown with sparse violet shimmer.  This is nicely pigmented, beautifully easily to apply and blend.
These are beautifully silky on my skin.  The glitter shades adhere very well and I have no fall out issues with these.  The satin brown shade is also wonderfully light feeling and silky.  While the olive cream is easy and smooth at this very moment, I continue to experience some anxiety about it drying out at some point.  I talked about the THREE cream issue here.  A little dim sum fixes everything.
There is a good chance that these colors would show up a lot more vibrantly on other, more neutral skin tones.  (I've seen it on Kate the Driveller!)  My skin has the magical ability to desaturate and taupify most things, so the general application effect looks very subtle, especially in indirect or indoor lighting.  See another great post from Liz from So Lonely in Gorgeous here.

But the shimmer that lights up is pretty amazing.
Here I am wearing My Blue Heaven.  I've used the cream shade as a base in tulip formation and on my lower lash line.  Tulip = in the inner and outer segments of my upper lid.  I layered the satin brown over the cream, as well as into my crease and over the lower lashline.  I used a flat, paddle-shaped kolinsky hair brush to pack the blue shimmer shade in the center of my upper lid as well as the middle of my lower lashline.  (tightlining, waterlining, mascaraing)  The pale top coat patted on with the pad of my finger to the center of upper lid.
Thanks for all the nice complements on my skin, lately!  In the interest of full disclosure, I wear a shitload of products and layer like 50 different skincare products!

Other products worn:
Tom Ford Traceless Foundation Stick in Pale Dune 02.  I love this more and more every day.
Surratt Concealer (was a GWP)
Rouge Bunny Rouge Diaphanous Loose Finishing powder
SUQQU Brow Palette in Moss Green
Lancome Hypnose Drama WP mascara
Tom Ford Espresso pencil
SUQQU Bright Up lipstick in 07 Akaanzu
I dunno what blush. :)

Now I want you to experience the magic of these shadows in bright direct natural light.

Voici: In front of a bright window, but indirect light.

Meow meow meow.

Now see this light up in bright direct natural light!
And then even more close up.
This reads like a very positive post on this quad, and it is mostly.  I think this palette provides a really nice way to incorporate some beautiful shimmer into one's life, but I have some general concerns now about the longevity of the cream shades in all my THREE products.

I am also kind of disappointed that on my skin, the vibrancy I was hoping for with the blue shade didn't pan out as I hoped.  The overall look (minus the crazy shimmer), is one of tonal subtleties, which is yet another take for me on a neutral palette.
I wonder if I am personally experiencing an overload not just of photos, but also of neutral palettes.  *strokes chin*  Hmm...  Well two more THREE palettes to come.

Have you given these THREE quads a try yet?  What is your experience so far?  If you had them for a while, do you find your feelings for these quads changing?

  1. You may be disappointed that it looks desaturated on you, dear Belly, but to me this is the prettiest neutral look with a touch of transculent bloo, incredibly pretty. In a way, it reminds me of the Fyrinnae eyeshadow I have called 'Work safe blue', or some such. Can't wait for your other THREE reviews!

    1. Work Safe Blooo! Yesss, Fyrinnae has such beautiful colors. I wish I could have figured out how to make those loose colors work for me, but it was beyond my sad skillz. :(
Thank you, Monika! My disappointment is in that the blue is so subtle on me, but overall, it is a very beautiful palette. I've grown to enjoy it more.

  2. OMG that olive cream!!! I actually like how subtle that blue turned out. It makes the palette wearable AND fun. I've never looked into any of these so far because I'm not sure how the cream shadow will fare. It's definitely something I'd purchase separately, but in a quad I'm just not sure!

    1. The cream + the blue is really pretty! I actually think these THREEs are a bit challenging to use because the cream takes time and apply, shape and blend a bit more so than a powder shade or even other cream shades. But the overall effect with the sparkles is so pretty and it's nice that the blue shade is so wearable.

  3. I absolutely love loooooooove how delicate that damn crazy blue turned out to be. I guess I would have also been taken aback by how differently it translates on the lids vs. the pan in terms of "punch", but the outcome is just so dreamy and... perfect. I had not considered this one before because the blue appears soooo bloooo on the pan, but now... Now I know! *hides wallet*. I am a bit hesitant to buy more of these only because of the same fear that the cream could dry out. However, yesterday I noticed that there is a huge dip in the burgundy cream of my Star Guitar and now I am a woman in despair. What on earth will I do with an empty pan of goodness and THREE full pans of lesser goodness? D:

    1. It's not crazy at all! Hardly even a slight bit unbalanced! >:( I R DISAPPOINT! I think the big disconnect is between my expectation from seeing the pan and seeing it applied on my skin. It IS very pretty though. Yeah, I'm very sad about how my other creams had gotten. It's quite a pricey pile of makeup for me that might potentially become unusable. :( I'd cry if Star Guitar went all bad. :'(

Cat, just keep on using the cream shade! You don't want to use it sparingly and have it all go baaaaaaad!

  4. I would not have bought this set, but anything you put on is stunning.
Your swatches help me choose the set. I bought #4 I think. I wish you have Sonia Rykiel to share. That brand will be discontinued in March of this year.

    1. Have you seen Kate Driveller & Liz from So Lonely in Gorgeous' Sonia Rykiel posts? And Sonia from Sweet Makeup Temptations has a big post with swatches of that line. Sad to hear it is being discontinued. I've heard it is an exquisite line.

    2. Yeh. I scouted them all. Chose two eyeshadows #7 and #8 and bought two lip lacquer and a lipstick, because of Liz. I looked at her pics and swatches.

  5. Belly, what is your favorite dim sum? I like har kow, shrimp in the rice noodle roll, egg tarts, bean curd wrap and chicken feet in black bean sauce.

    1. snails in black bean sauce, little pork ribs, all of the dumplings I can shovel into my mouth. And then a little bowl of almond tofu to follow up. :D Now I'm hungry again.

    2. I love dim sum. If the city I visit have dim sum, I will go there. I took my ole lady to one in NYC Chinatown. Then my cousin drive me to Flushing for dim sum. I live in California. Good to know you like what I like.

  6. I love this sophisticated, grown-up palette! I know it does not pack a punch of color but still looks very nice. I love the color placement you did and esp the grolive shade! So, the cream shade is just one out of four?

My fave dimsum is the taro dumplings that is deep-fried in egg batter (not sure the name), sticky rice, and chinese chive dumplings (either fried or steamed). What's yours?

    1. Yes, in the quads the cream shade is just one of the four and in the duos, it is one of two.

I love stick rice with the sausage in it! I forgot to mention above, I love the tripe & the chicken feet too. I like things with weird texture. :P Yum.

    1. The shimmer is really beautiful in these THREE palettes. If you check out the brand, check out just one eye shadow quad or duo at a time to see how you get along with those creams. For many people, they really don't like the cream shade (fading, wear-time etc). I have oily lids and over my Nars primer, they last just okay.

  9. This is the quad that had stopped me from getting Suqqu 19. Now...I want both XD
I do agree that THREE's shimmery complexity and orgasmic...umm ness bests TF, no matter how flirtaciously TF products are named. I have a feeling I'll experience similar issues as you have though, and it will pull together into a gorgeous neutral on me.... So in conclusion, I should order Suqqu 19!

  10. This reminds me of my Shiseido Opera trio! (The first three starting from the left, esp.) It's so sparkly sparkly pretty *__*

    1. OH YES! Larie, you are right on! It's like Opera and that doesn't have the potentially difficult cream shade! I just put up a post on the other three quad, the one with the pink and it reminds me so much of Shiseido Pink Sands!

  11. I think these look positively radiant on you! I absolutely adore the sheer, iridescent finish! A sub-par wear time is a bit of a bummer though :( I'd love to hear how the others work out!
Also, where can you purchase THREE in the US?

    1. Do you have dry lids & skin? If so, you might do well with them!

  13. it really does taupify on you!! So interesting!!! THREE has some amazing colors, but i just cant get the cream shades to show up on me! Argh, i need to go dig my quads out and give them another whirl! Love this palette on you!

    1. Thanks Linda! The color compositions are very interesting. Everything = taupe on me pretty much. It's really bizarre. I'm guessing its because I have a lot of pigment in my skin which interferes with colors showing up cleanly.

Yes, please dig them out again. I hope your creams are in good shape!
