Counter Walking

I had the opportunity to take a walk outside in some glorious Springtime weather yesterday.  There's a lot of ruckus about the possible elimination of the horse-drawn carriages in New York City.  I have mixed thoughts altogether about the whole situation, but seeing them parked along the south side of Central Park is indeed very picturesque (and kind of smelly).  Passing the horses lead straight to Bergdorf Goodman and a walk through the counters.

I've been interested in a couple of things to see in person, mainly the Chanel Perfection Lumiere Velvet one and also the new Bobbi Brown Skin foundation stick one.  I am rather in a foundation kind of a mood lately even though, as usual, I'm well stocked in other foundations already in my rotation.

I got a few sachets of the Chanel one in B30 to try out, which looked a bit pinker and darker than my neck since they didn't have any of the B20.  But I will see how I get on with it.  The flatter finish of matte foundations are generally not my preferred finish, but I'm interested in seeing how it would perform in terms of oil control.

The SA at the Bobbi Brown counter was very nice and he showed me the new stick, which is formulated on a clear base (old one was white) with pigments added to it, which apparently should make for a more natural looking finish.  He cut a chunk of shade 3 (beige) for me to try.

I tried out the Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation stick out today.  No.  No.

I guess it could have been an unfair day to test out a new foundation.  My skin is an unholy mess lately.  I am so dehydrated that my skin is falling off my face into large giant flaky chunks.  I'm wondering if something I did has caused some sort of contact dermatitis because I am also experiencing some severe red patches, with bumps.  All the redness is making my face look very dark, too.  I'm dry!  I'm dehydrated!  I'm oily!  I... my face is falling off!

I suppose if a new foundation covered up and made my skin look nice then I should buy it because it would be some magnificent foundation.

So the Bobbi Brown Skin stick.  No, it didn't do so well under these very adverse conditions.  The color is slightly too dark, and the coverage was a bit light, especially with a light layer applied with a damp Beauty Blender to properly cover up the redness in my skin.  I contemplated applying another thin layer to address the coverage needs, but noticed how terribly the foundation piled up around my flakes.  On the patches of good looking skin, the foundation also kind of sat on top.  And sunk into my pores on my nose.  And basically made me look blech.

Looking at the ingredients, it looks like there's no silicone which seems to affect how it blends into the skin.  I basically had a tougher time working the product and blending it in.
"Glyceryl Triacetyl Ricinoleate, Octyldodecanol, Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2, Polyethylene, Ozokerite, Kaolin, Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Barium Sulfate, Bisabolol, Stearyl Glycyrrhetinate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Pentaerythrityl Tetra-di-t-butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate. May Contain: Titanium Dioxide (CI77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), Mica."

Moving on.

At the Chanel counter, I did see the new Summer Illusion D'Ombre in New Moon, Utopia and Mirage.  (swatched the that order, left to right)

*___* oh mah gah, mommy!  The sparklies!
New Moon had a multi-colored glitter finish and it was RIDICULOUSLY glittery and gorgeous.
I only own Diapason of the Illusion D'Ombre and I really love the beautiful complexity of that one.  But I am not a huge fan of these from Chanel in general, finding them a bit too sheer and glittery for my taste.  But these got my salivary glands working in overtime.  The base color of these shades were all very rich and swatched nicely.

Sorry I've been a bit MIA lately.  I've been very busy.  Hope these Chanel swatches from the counter make up for it a bit. ;)

Have you found a good foundation for when your skin is having a good old freakout?

    1. I used to really love the Skin liquid one. The finish on the skin is so pretty, but didn't last so well on my oily parts. I'm looking forward to giving the new Chanel a try. :) Aren't the IdOs so ridiculously pretty???
NY is very pretty now. The temperature is much more reasonable and the trees are all budding with flower. So very lovely here in the spring!

  2. Thank you for your counter spy ways, as always!!! Thank goodness from all the swatches and reviews I've so far seen of all the new Chanel, I think I can safely pass LOL :-) If anything I'd get a polish. Maybe? So sorry to hear about your skin issues. Boo. Does it have to do with your changing from Amore Pacific?? I hope it resolves soon...uncomfortable skin stinks. Been going through that off and on myself for the past six months, especially since January...but think (hopefully) it's on the waning end. Thanks for sharing...love your wanderings!!! smooches!!!

    1. THey had nice looking new nail polishes but they chip on my nails in like a DAY. Horribly incompatible with my nails for some bizarro reason.

I'm pretty sure it's from all the skincare changes I've made. Yah. And the season changing seems to also be pulling a number on my skin. Thank you for your sweet comment, Gummykins! <33

  3. Hope your skin calms down soon! That Chanel foundy hasnt hit TW counters yet, eagerly awaiting.
Sorry to hear the Bobbi didnt work well on you (currently). I'm firmly in the impressed camp. Got mine in Beige 3, and it is a pretty good match, but as my oils and redness seep through, it does become slightly dark as the day wears on.

At the counter, the SA slapped on a whole heap of their rather rich moisturizer on me, then a thick layer of one of her face bases, then he used the foundation stick, warrior face tattooing it on my face then spreading it even with a domed foundation brush. To my surprise, that had held up really well that day. I still cant bring myself to slather on so much moisturizer and base in hot weather, but it's worked well with my normal routine. I dont have any dry patches atm, so it may be that this just doesn't suit dried out skin.

If you're able to snag a sample, I'm recently loving Givenchy's Dr. White CC Cream (hopefully it's not an Asia exclusive line), it's got decent coverage, oil controlling while not at all drying. Love this much more than the Bourjois. Sadly it does only come in one supposedly magically universal colour.

    1. I feel like the new Chanel might be nice for warmer humid weather! I hope you see it before the summer! I wonder if you get the more yellow beige ochres shades there? I tried on B30 which is horribly pink on me, SAD!

Initially the 3 looked like a good color match until I think the oxidation made it an off color for me too!!! I had kind of high hopes for this because I really admire her color range for my yellow skin! I actually have a jar of the vitamin enriched face base. I wonder if it would work nicer with it prior to the stick application??? ooh, must try this out again.

The Givenchy looks like an Asia/AU/EU product. Of course. Stupid US.

  4. Sorry to hear about your skin woes! It's strange, because my skin is always at its worst when the temperature changes from cold to mild. It seems less problematic in the depths of winter, I swear.I've been so curious about that Chanel foundation, but I'm always a little leery of trying them, since I've had allergic reactions to any of their skin care products I've tried. Look forward to your thoughts on it, though.

    1. Maybe because during the winter we give it extra moisturizing tlc that our skins behave a bit better? Seems like I need to ramp up the super moisturization again. Seems like my skin as it is getting older just needs more and more and more moisture.

I dont think the new Chanel is going to work well for me. Aside from the colors being too pink for me, the fragrance is super strong! Blech! And doesn't seem to be kind of flakiness which I seem to have a great deal of right now.

  5. I feel like everyone's going through foundation issues at the moment - which is probably due to our skin trying to adapt to new season. Weirdly enough, my skin has been quite ok lately; maybe the years of product research are finally paying off?! Gosh, that New Moon really is pretty. Swoon.

  6. Hey Belly, gah so sorry to hear your skin is misbehaving! I haven't found a foundation that looks good when mine is freaking out, but the Hourglass primer serum does help! So looking forward to the new Illusion d'Ombres!

The summer Illusion d'Ombre are seriously off the charts gorgeous!

  7. Silicone-free? That line alone has me interested! I might go try it just for the sake of you know, science. Also "new moon" needs to come live with me! :)

    1. Hi Mia! There's all sorts of things that seem to simultaneously moisturize and dry at the same time. Really weird mix of stuff. But yes! How often do we see silcone free???!!!

New Moon needs a home in your makeup collection for sure!!!

  8. Sorry to hear about your skin issues. I'm using the Mandom Baby Moist Lotion (super moist) for pre-moisturizing, and it is working quite well for me although I think it is also the heavier cream I've been using. My skin gets quite flaky if I skip these multiple steps, too. Frustrating! It also has to do with this finicky weather. You're not alone! Hope you find a skincare regimen that works for you so you can soon wear whatever foundation you want. :)

    1. I was using a full range of the Mandom stuff (including the lotion), but I don't think they are hydrating enough for my really weird skin these days. It's very odd since this warmer weather would normally make my skin more on the oilier side of things. :) Flakes make everything look bad!

  9. Sorry to hear about your skin woes! Mine is kinda acting weird too. I've found that boosting hydration is the first line of attack. Layering hydrating products would be a good strategy. Put on a layer, wait, check skin and if it still seems dehydrated put on another layer of the same product or a heavier formulation (your choice). After a week of this morning and night, you will see a positive change and that's when you can introduce other products with actives to address other concerns. Oh and it helps to drink lotsa water and fresh veggie-fruit juices. Hope things take a turn for the better soon!

    1. :) thank you so much for letting me prattle on about my skin woes! Yes, layering seems to be the best to help the skin recover!!

  10. oh dear Belly, i hope your skin recovers soon too! Must be the change in weather? Or your skincare routine...? That Bobbi stick contains kaolin, which is probably not a good idea if your face is falling off.... I remembered when my skin was that bad when I was living in SF... and the only thing I could use was the La Mer tinted sunscreen! Maybe just take a breather from trying out new foundations, and just use some tinted thingys....xx

    1. Linda, I saw the kaolin clay in the ingredients and had a real HUH moments. Seems like an odd hodge podge of ingredients to have both shea butter and kaolin clay in it at the same time. It did seem that the stick did a good job keeping the oils in check, so I think when my skin is a bit recovered I will try it out again. :) I can't help trying out things! Much to the sad detriment to my face!!

  11. Tempting pretties! I hope your skin gets better soon. When my skin hates me I leave it bare or slap on it pure vitamin e oil if too painful. Btw the mandom serum stuff was bad for my dermatitis patch that only went away after using prescribed steroid cream.

    1. Shiny glittery pretty things! I don't think I will end up buying any... trying to be prudent, but they sure are pretty!!

After a few days of getting back to my old Amore Pacific skincare routine, my skin seems to be getting back to normal. I shall need to put my experiments with Mandom on hold. :(

  12. Urgh, maybe it's not fair to Blame it on the Bobbi but her original Skin Foundation did nothing to improve on my skin either. And let's not even talk about that cakey concealer she sells.

Laura Mercier is great for when my face is falling off however. The tinted moisturiser doesn't cling to flakes, and the hydrating primer works wonders under any type of foundation. If you have some high pigment base (like KA Sensual Skin Enhancer), that can be mixed with the TM/primer for fuller coverage.

    1. :DD I see you are not a huge BB fan! Gosh, I've lived & died (and caked up) by the concealer and correctors or a long time until I realized that sheerer and friendlier formulas ended up being much more nice looking, especially under my eyes.
Luckily, my skin seems to be getting a little bit back to normal, so looking forward to slathering on all the weird foundations!! SSE is a great product, but in spite of trying them on in person, I couldn't find a match for me.

  13. I was thinking about buying that new BB stick, now you have me wondering, wonder if there is a way I can subtley smear some on my face without the SA's noticing... :)
Loving the look of those Chanel shadows, think that's the most appealing thing from the collection, I always find their summer collections a bit samey each year but they look like stand outs x

    1. Hi Clare, seems like some people like that new stick a lot. I say at least rub it into a drier part of your arm or hand because I don't think the texture is very kind of dryness. :((
Yes! I agree! The new Illusion D'Ombres are really standouts this summer from Chanel.

  14. I have found that when my skin is freaking out, there's nothing for it. A little RMS concealer and maybe some Jane Iredale pressed mineral powder, and I'll look tolerable. But mostly I just wait it out.

One thing from Bobbi Brown I have been loving recently is the Art Stick in Cassis. I went to Nordstrom and must have talked to 4 different SAs, telling them I was looking a "soft" red. They looked at me like I was crazy. One suggested a color from Chanel, telling me it was a "beginner's" red (I farted in her general direction, iykwim). So I took a look at the BB counter and Cassis was just right! Nice formula, too (long-lasting and non-drying).

    1. Red shadow! SWOOON! That sounds incredible to me! What are the Art Sticks like? Are they like the cream sticks from the line or multi purpose? I laughed when you released some gas in that direction. LOL! :))

  15. Oh my word, the sparkle!!! I will swatch them for sure but I doubt I'll get one because they seem a bit over the top for me but wow are they gorgeous!!! I want the nail polishes from that Chanel collection, all of them! :)

When my skin is on the blah side I just use a little powder makeup with a brush for extra coverage over my base which these days is a BB cream and it usually does the trick.
