Lipstick Week: Day 2 True Red - YSL Glossy Stain 9 Rouge Laque

In this installment of Lipstick Week, I take on stinky smell.  Yes, it's the YSL Glossy Stain.  It's not the color or the formula that repels me, it's the intense sickeningly sweet smell of every YSL lip product I have tried.  Like, gag me with a spoon.

However, I received a neat sample card from an order I placed online at Neiman Marcus.  I decided to grit my teeth and give these a try.  Can't waste a good sample, you know.
In it, three shades of YSL's Glossy Stains.  No 9 Rouge Laque, No 11 Rouge Gouache, and 7 Corail Aquatique.
Today, a mostly neutral, slightly warm leaning red, Rouge Laque.  These suckers really are glossy.  The particular shade has a translucency which goes a sheer with the first layer and then built up for more opacity and depth.  This swatch is more of a glob than a swipe.
On my lips.  (Let's honorably ignore any weird hairs, nasal discoloration and zits, shall we?  There no flakes in this picture.  Noooo.)  This is two thin layers, which looks warm and slightly sheer.  And of course, the glossiness is there.  Very pretty.  Too bad for the gross rotting fruit smell.... so close under my nose.  *hork*
Here I am indoors, in natural light.  I like how the color, even though bright, wears like a neutral color on me.  Despite the obviously high pigmentation (which my lips tend to be wary of), it was comfortable to wear without the icky stickiness of lip gloss.
This picture makes me laugh.  Obviously Bacon is being pondered.
One more insufferable selfie, but this time outdoors.
Wear time was  long. It stayed well in place, even retaining most of it's shine into its 4th hour before the smell made me wipe it all off.  The stain part of the product didn't work on me though, at least on my lips.  On my arm, it left a very faint stain:

Am I going to buy it? Nope, nope, nope.  Never ever with that smell.

I know lots of folks are fans of the Glossy Stains.  What about you?  What cosmetic brand has a scent that makes you want to crawl the walls?

  1. Beautiful! I hate overbearing scents in cosmetics. Guerlain has lovely products but I can't buy them with those scents.

    1. Hi Dawn,
I do love the color and the formula. It's weird. I really don't mind scent in cosmetics, even that strong Guerlain and Burberry scents. I don't know what's my deal with YSL. *hork!*

  2. I hate the YSL smells! Yay, I have found a kindred spirit. They're not that great for me to volunteer to pay $30+ and ignore that smell. LOL. Such a pretty swatch, though. I wish it looked that bright on your lips!

    And yay, lipstick weeeeeek!

    1. You, too! :D Yay! I think the swatch is way prettier than on the lips. But I don like how wearable it is for my coloring.

  3. Beautiful! That red shade looks amazing against your skin tone! You should find a similar one but without the nastiness. I'm with you on the smell, god please stop adding smells to makeup. To me the worst offender are Dolce & Gabbana (the lipsticks) and Guerlain, it's just horrible!

    1. Hi Ana Marta! Lovely red, no? I have a few reds, so I'm not crying over not being able to wear this one. If cosmetics companies eliminated all scents, they would have less nauseated consumers. I also really despise drugstore lipsticks scents. Which is a shame, because there are some really nice products out there.

  4. I feel the same way about the YSL stank. I haven't bought one of the glossy stains yet, but I have several of the Rouge Pur Couture lipsticks. Those are a bit better than the Rouge Volupte ones (the appeal of which is totally lost on me). Normally, I don't mind a little scent and even Guerlain and Chanel are OK with me, but yeah, that supposed "fig" smell that some companies add- and YSL are THE WORST- is atrocious. Still, that shade looks really beautiful on you. I'm sure it would be extremely fashionable with a crisp shirt and a nose plug. Maybe one with pearls or something.

    1. LOL! I do need that nasal accessory, just for my YSL GS occasions.

  5. Aw, too bad you hate the smell that much. The Glossy Stains are some of my fave lipticks! But I can see how the smell can be too much for some - it is quite strong indeed! Loving the red on your skintone though!

    1. Thanks Annick. I am greatly impressed with the formula. It's incredible how glossy and pigmented these are.

  6. Both L'Oreal lipsticks make me gag. I bought a gorgeous Burberry in a swap but didn't realize about.the.smell. It's a fall color so, I think I'm going to let it sit out uncapped for a week and see if that helps to dispel the stink.

    1. omg. L'Oreals in general and Maybelline Vivids. yucks. yucks. yucks.

Let me know if that de-scents the lipsticks! I'm curious to hear if it works.

  7. "rotting fruit" smell isn't too enticing... besides that, that's an intensively beautiful colour on you

  9. You look like a moddle in the first selfie. :D

I have just one YSL GS - #5 Rouge Vintage. Lovely colour, but doesn't stain my lips which is what I wanted in the first place because I'm shockingly lazy when it comes to reapplying lip products. Like, I will walk around for the second half of the day with foundation, blush, eyeshadow and all but nekkid lips. I don't love the scent, but I hate the Chanel JC scent even more. :S

    1. oh you! Why does it stain on some people and not others? I can tolerate the JC smell. Even if the YSL's were toned down in the stink department, perhaps I can abide. #5 is beautiful!! I can see how the lighter colors won't stain, but #5 seems pretty dark. Feh!

  10. Shame about the smell because that's a lovely shade of red on you!
I can't stand fragrance/stinkies on lipsticks either. Have stopped using Burberry lip covers just because everytime I wear it I swear I can taste the perfumey chemical rose smell... :S
Everyone mentions a smell with Guerlain but I've got the RAs and RGs and can't smell anything? They're by far my favourite lipsticks for that reason and that they're so moisturising :D

    1. Hi Wen! Those Guerlains totally smell! :)))
I like those a lot too. Such nice formulas.

  11. The color looks really pretty on you, though! Too bad about the smell :(

  12. Oddly enough, I can tolerate the boozy-fruity smell of YSL glossy stain. I can NOT stand Guerlain's though -- the colors are amazing but really, I must think twice about the scent. Even Burberry's I can't stand (but caved in for the color & formulation), or anything floral on my lips :-p I just can't understand why some cosmetics company decided that it is good to have floral scent on the lips, gourmand is a more logical choice for me. Besides, you have that bright, red, stunning Suqqu lipstick (forgot the name, but it's about 10-15 alphabet long LOL) who needs this when you have that Suqqu? Uff, sorry for the rambling..

  13. a few years ago i did not mind this smell at all. now i kind of wish it wasn't there, but it doesn't horrify me yet lol. this color is awesome on you though. it is quite possibly the one i own.

  14. I agree with you on the whole sickly scent part. I actually feel like YSL lip products have the worst scents ever, at least the voluptes and the glossy stains, but I still think the voluptes are the worst smelling lipsticks I have ever used, and they're two creamy to last, I am just not a fan of them at all. However, the glossy stains are so good that I just dont mind putting up with the smell when I use it.
I have also read some comments about Guerlain products, and I must admit that the smell is one of the reasons why guerlain is my all time favorite brand. Especially the smell of the terracotta bronzers!!
