The Natural Law of On-Line Makeup Ordering

Over the past 3 or so weeks, I placed various orders on line.  I did not order them all at the same time.  I got home from work and saw on the floor:
They all arrived at the same time.  Thank you, makeup god, for making me look like a spend-crazy lunatic.  Oh wait... if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck...

Even when I think, oh one little little thing or two, they seem to arrive in these enormous boxes which look so wasteful and look so packed full.

Mr Belly exclaimed: "More?!  Again?!"

They all seemed to reasonable when I placed the order.  It's so easy pressing SUBMIT.  But then when they all show up at the same time, it does make me feel a bit sick.

Would you like to see the inside of these boxes?  I added a bonus of my Fyrinnae samples which came one day earlier.  Yes, there is always one that seems contrary to the laws of Makeup Nature.
Fyrinnae little samples

This is what made that one box so HUGE

On the hunt for a well pigmented lipstick that feels good
Um... plus more because one is a box feels loney
Mr Belly & I are thinking about planning for a vacation and he asked me: do I want to spend money on a bunch of little things that add up, or a few bigger and more meaningful things (vacation, as an example).  I don't know if it's a fair comparison or an easy way to think through things, because for me, makeup gives me lots of small pleasures.  Some things for me to ponder about Belly-style.

Looks like I have much to play with and report back on, eh?

How about you?  Do the wasteful boxes and packing materials of ordering on line bother you?  Do all your boxes all arrive at the same time, too?!  (Is Makeup Nature conspiring against me??)

  1. The exact same thing seems to happen to me. I'll get boxes upon boxes at once. It's getting kinda embarrassing, lol. Like yesterday--I got 5 boxes from Nordstroms. And they are terrible--sometimes they ship samples separate from the actual items--so I end up with even more boxes. It's crazy. Totally know how you feel.

    1. Ugh yes! The multiple orders for one order when they ship from multiple locations! AGH!

    1. Surely there is a balance between the feel good and the shame. Hmm... at a more appropriate level. What is it? How do I find this balance?

  3. Same here with all my packages arriving at the same time, I'm embarrass to see the UPS man/woman now, lol. Though I don't find the packaging wasteful since I have an online shop & save all the boxes & stuffing to ensure everything I send comes in one piece & have yet to spend a dime on packing material other than tape so it works out fantastic for me ;)It does seem ridiculous at times when I get a huge box for a teeny weeny thing, but I understand some businesses buy in bulk certain sizes & must use what they have. Plus it's good you receive your items in one piece. Once I ordered from Beauty.com a Kevyn Aucoin eyeshadow palette & received it broken & crumble because whoever packed it just threw it in an empty box without any padding/air bubble stuffing :'( I was so mad since it was such hassle to return & wait again for a new item! Thankfully that hasn't happen to me again in a long time.

    1. Speaking of Beauty.com, I've only had excellent excellent experiences with them, but I did here that they don't always do a great job packing up their fragile cosmetics items. If only they took a bit of a cue from Nordstrom (but not the 5-boxes!) and packed a little better!
I always try to recycle my boxes for other uses, but hmm, my inflow of boxes seem higher than my outflow. D:

  4. Hey I feel the same as you do about buying as much make up as I do!

But I hope you enjoy the laura mercier make up bag as much as I do! I adore mine, its a great design.

  5. I appreciate that you share the "makeup guilt" along with your makeup lovelies.
I think if I lived in the States (where you often have free shipping), this could be me. Your husband makes a good point about prioritizing where your money goes. At the same time I get where you're coming from. My makeup purchases are like rays of sunshine bathing my heart with beauty, happiness, and indulgent girliness. :)

    1. thanks BooBooNinja. I have to think that it can't be good for me to state all the time: HAUL POST. EVERYTHING GOOD! While I am financially prudent and spend within my means, it looks so obscene when all the boxes come in. On the other hand...as you say, rays of sunshine! Indulgent girly beautiful things.

    2. Oh girl, I'm glad you haven't abandoned the blog. When you use capitals I'm reminded of my favourite line: "A frenzy of aggle flabble gobble wobble BUY! BUY! BUY!"

But let's get back on topic. You have to give yourself pats on the back for being aware enough of your habits to hold blog sales. You're not hoarding things and I doubt you're purchasing items willy nilly.

    3. Seems like in my last blog sales, I'm purging things that have dupes in my collection I prefer (or something like it). Like TF Enchanted is beautiful and well loved but I prefer the feel of Suqqu Himesango (and so forth). Or that new Burberry sheer red, also glorious, but I have too many sheer reds. I bet there is a lesson in there somewhere. If only I knew what it was...

  7. My coworkers think I freelance as a makeup artist instead of an illustrator because of those boxes lol At the end of the day they are still paint and brushes. The other day my mother told me to buy more clothes instead so my clothes and face match up. It's so easy to over do makeup and not have a matching outfit. :( my daily struggle lol *my solution is bare face lol then that leads to why did I buy all that makeup.

    1. oh moms. My mom saw my lipsticks and literally laughed out loud at the preposterous number I own. Actually, in my conversation with my husband, he told me to go buy some clothes which he considers a more prudent expenditure. I don't necessarily agree. Don't go bare faced, Selphia! WEAR ALL THE MAKEUPS!

  9. Maybe you and Mr. Belly can come up with a vacation savings plan together, along with a small frivolous spending budget for yourself. That way you can both get what you want and feel no guilt :)

    1. :) We debate this plan every evening. Disney, no DIsney. Disney, no Disney. Oh, FFS, no more BOXES, MRS BELLY!

  10. I'm with you, Belly. It happened to me when I ordered a few items from Nordie, all come in singular boxes (not sure why) and my nanny was home to receive it all... she must have thought I'm a big spender #-) And Mr.Belly was right, I am reminded about that a lot now that we are doing some little make over around the home. Not super exciting, mostly window covering, furnitures, garden, but alas! An order from Neiman's will cover one window's custom treatment.. hmm, decisions decisions..

    1. Nordstroms seem to use multiple stores to fulfill there orders which help them optimize their inventory. But when you get 5 boxes for one order, it makes the receiver feel a little ehhh...especially when you get a box just for samples!!

That's a funny way to look at things: Window Treatment or Neiman Marcus order! *whispers neiman marcus every time*

  11. I haven't ordered online in a loooonnnng time but when I did this never happened. So I didn't feel wasteful and overwhelmed. It was always joyful and exciting and glorious, like an achievement of some sort. Now that I shop more over the counters, I no longer take their shoppers. I just stuff my goodies in my hand bag so I don't have to deal with extra paper bags later on. And those shoppers are heavy!!!

  12. You are correct, this is in accordance with the laws of the Makeup Universe.

Big boxes make me a little crazy. Neiman Marcus is especially bad, once they sent me a Shu Uemura blush (just one!) in a huge box. That's just plain silly.

  13. Oh, and I'm eager to see your reviews of the Kjaer Weis pretties. I've been lusting after that brand for well over a year now...

  14. Ha ha!!! We were away for a week and came home to similar surprises!! Like you said, it never seems like that much when you only order a few things at a time. I can't believe the LM portfolio came in a box that HUGE!!! Expecting mine any day now...and am super excited to try it out :-)
